Tgk Movie Sket~ :D :D

Assalamualaikum :)

As usual: "whooaahh, been a while since my last post aye?"

Since my laptop has refused to start on me, I'm now writing on my android machine. A challenge for myself that an android machine can substitute a Windows based laptop on daily work and routine. Let's see how it goes.

Let's get back to business (which is? hahaha). I want to talk about "Menghina Islam". I'm not sure if I can find an English word which well describe the situation in Malaysia. The term "menghina Islam" is widely used no matter how big or small the issue is. "Oi, that's menghina Islam!", "Wey, this's menghina Islam" so on and so forth.  We are sensitive when it comes to religion and racial issues. When I say we, I point to those who speak the loudest and heard by and streamed by the mainstream media. I don't know whether they represent the majority of our people, but they speak as if they do, so this is the "we" I'm talking about. Though there are certain things I refused to agree fought by these so called "pejuang bangsa, agama whatsoever", but they seen by others as the representative, as the voice of Islam, Malay, Malaysia, or whatever they want to be known
as.

I watched this malay horror movie last year, Misteri Jalan Karak (i'm not quite sure the real name of the movie :p). What disturbed me back then was how they sell to the people of how we can shoo away demons by reciting the quran. It's not that I'm against the use of the Holy Quran to protect yourself, it's just that the actors and actress who use the verses from the Quran is not, well, Islamic? The term Islamic doesn't mean they have to wear long robes and stuff. The thing that itched me was that they represented themselves as group of students with a free lifestyle. Where a bloke and his girlfriend sit together, touching each other etc. Some people might argue that that's the message the producers want to brought forward. A 'kampung' girl with proper Islamic values, went to the Big City and somehow lost her values, and this event brings her back to her old self. The message is good, the acting's excellent but the moral (islamic la of coz) was not. It's true they're acting, but the fiqh remains. Just because they're acting doesn't mean they're free to do whatever they want.

Another movie I watched was Rasuk. Another movie with Quran 'salesperson'. At the end of the movie, the 'husband' hugs his 'wife' and recite verses from the Quran to free her from the demon. A non muhrim, hugging each other, reciting Quran. What puzzles me is, no one talked about this issue. Where are the so-called pejuang bangsa, agama whatever? I'm not a good person myself, but, this is just absurd. I'm not an expert but Surah at-Taubah, verse 9, rang my mind when I think about this. There're lots other example but, let's just make these 2 as my case study for now. I don't want to go on a rampage to our film industry. If what I felt makes me labelled as a hyper-sensitive person, so be it. I'm far from a perfect person, but this somehow disturbed me.

Failure2 Sket~ :D :D

Assalamualaikum J

I have always wanted to tell my students every time they complained about their low marks I gave them this:

“I want to let you experience failure for I believe that to be a very good experience. You should never expect your success rate to be 100% in your every attempt in whatever you’re doing in your life. I have no problem whatsoever in failing you. I do believe that you will at some point of your life fail in doing something. It’s the experience of how to handle failure is important. You can do your best in everything, but not everything is what you’re expected them to become. I think school is the best place to experience failure. There are no real consequences, just raw emotion of failing at something. You should experience failure so you know how it feels to fail, so you would try your best not to fail, and even if you do, you know how to handle failure. Failure should be celebrated as the norms of life. Life is full of risk. Experience teaches us what risk should be taken and which should be avoided. Calculated risk is not the same as pure gamble of luck. You should expect to fail, then only you would prepare to face your failure, if failure awaits. Failure is one way of telling that you’re not going the right direction. Fail now so you won’t fail when it matters the most, even if you do, you know how to handle them. As people say, prepare your best, expect the worst.”

I know this sounds a little (little??) preachy and dramatic. That’s why I wrote it here instead of telling this to my students. I’m not good at telling this verbally, I would die laughing instead, hehe.

If you call me ‘cikgu’ and you’re reading up to this paragraph, mark this post somewhere in your little fat between your ears.

Ngaja2 Sket~ :D :D

Assalamualaikum J

When I was still in my university years, I used to think about what’s the best way to teach physics to my future students. When I was interviewed by MARA, I told them personally that the best way to teach students physics is to let the students ‘feel’ physics. Let them explore and let them learn from their mistakes and show them how physics is one of the knowledge that give them the space to be creative and try to explain the universe and how it works. Ideally I planned an environment where the students are free to dig the subject, plan their own experiments, and ultimately have the ability to deduce. It doesn’t have to be the right explanation, as long they’re comfortable to share and discuss their ideas, that’ll be just fine. I’d like to make an environment where the students feel safe to pour their thoughts in my class. Where their views are respected and sharing ideas is one of the main elements in my teaching.

How my ideals were quickly crushed, well, not crushed but I quickly realized the challenges, when I started my career as a teacher. I have learnt physics much that I have immersed myself into an ideal world. Just a quick explanation, in physics, we deal mostly in a controlled environment. I could do the stuff I want in my 1st paragraph of this post, but I have to celebrate the fact that I need to appreciate the external factors that influence my teaching profession. One of the factors I left out from my equation of teaching students physics was time. At the end of the day, I have to prepare my students for their exams, which will prepare them for their SPM. I have to complete the syllabus in time no matter what. We could argue about the exam-oriented policies all we want, but that’s not my main point right now.

Another factor which I regret taking out is the students’ understanding of the subject. I assume the students will all understand the things I say to them the first time they hear them. How easy I forgot how I was as well a student who didn’t have a clue on what’s my teacher’s blabbing in front. I have as well need to take into my consideration that for example in a class of 25 students, there will be students who are quite advanced in their understanding of the topic that it’ll bore them to death if I reduce my pace to cater the students who have difficulties in understanding physics. Not that I feel the students who are quite slow in understanding my teachings to be a burden to me, rather I find those students to be the most interesting as I was in their shoes when I was at school and I’d like to see the happiness in their faces when they finally grab the concepts I wasted (invest maybe?) my saliva on to explain in my class. As I pay my attention to this type of students, the advanced should never be discriminated upon. That’s the challenge. We’re are not at all the same, and I have to give my attention to everyone in my limited space of time, and my physical being, as one man.

* sometimes I do think teaching as an art. Both an art to convince people and to make your audience understand what you’re ‘selling’ and an art of producing this:-

Basically, that’s how the world runs. We can plan all we want, but the randomness still there. The best we could do is to consider as many circumstances as we can and plan on how to tackle the situations. At the end, I’m a human being who could never estimate everything the chaotic world throws at me. It’ll be tiring and sometimes not worth the time spent. That’s why to me personally, the planning is not everything, the way we handle the issue when it arises is also important. That’s something we can brush on. It’s a skill that comes from experience, sometimes from the experience of others. Problems are not to be ignored, they have to be faced. We won’t get full if we don’t eat, as well we won’t have experience if we don’t face our problems.

Tu dia ayat :D :D

What to Love :D :D

Assalamualaikum J

I listened to this song by Lo, “Operator”, while I was driving one day. I used to not to listen very well to the song but 1 part of the song really spoke to me that day. The song was about a guy who fell in love with a girl, but somehow she changed and he couldn’t really accept the changes in her, as the lyrics suggest “…you broke all the was inside me..”.

Question is what is really there to love?

I used to think about this when I, as a normal human being had a crush on someone, which was years ago (2 days before the dinosaurs extinct to be exact, and still the most bitter way of understanding the world I ever had..). I liked this girl very much that someday I thought about what’s in her that I really want, that I really want to be connected to? Sometimes love is not something you can control. It just happens. The Sun is not something we can control of its existence, it’s just there for us to utilize once we realized how to use the energy released by it, so does love.

If we love someone for his/her attitude, well, that’s not going to last, as people do change. If we love someone for his/her beauty, well, that will never going to last as well, as our definition of beauty will change, same goes for wealth, intelligence, and so on. So what is there to love? What is love? Why are we ‘burdened’ with this uninvited ‘guest’? When I say burdened, it is a burden both when your love is not accepted and even when your love is warmly welcomed by the other party; they’re both heavy for the unprepared.

People say to love for Allah. This is my way of loving for Allah. This might sound stupid, but, it’s how I picture it. Whenever I liked someone for example, I used to draw this line of me connecting to this person and the line continues to Allah. (Pardon the quality of the drawing, super amateur in action).

When I have this mental picture of loving for Allah, one of the advantages is I realized that everything is from Allah, and everything is for Allah. Even if we met the person we truly love, and we’re not the only ones feeling that, and we managed to somehow live with that person, as mortals, we must prepare for the loss of our loved ones (that if we’re not the one answering Allah’s call first). When I have this mental picture of loving for Allah, I know that ultimately, the person I love the most is His, and that person would forever be His, and He borrowed me the pleasure of knowing and living together with this person. Love is not like Hindustan movies. I will try my best not to be bound by love. I will try my best to remind myself that ultimately, only Allah is the one who’ll be there, whenever, wherever, and whatever. The love he borrows, only as a tool to perfect us as human beings, which its existence we shouldn't deny, and hopefully not a tool I would use to bring upon His wrath on me and everything and everyone I care for.

Price-less sket~ :D :D

Assalamualaikum J

I was driving back from Penang to KB when I saw, well, not actually saw, but about 2-3 minutes late from an accident in action at Lebuhraya Timur Barat, around Banjaran Titiwangsa. Smoke rose from the scene which involved a Waja and a motorcycle. I don’t think anyone survived that event. The traffic stalled for about ½ an hour or so and I kept thinking about how devastating the accident was.

Just after passing the scene, I was still thinking about the accident, for the next 5 minutes. After that my attention was back on the road (which what I was supposed to do as a driver). That lead me thinking of how insignificant we are. We think our lives worth everything the sky and the earth can throw at us, but we tend to forget that the world won’t stop spinning, the Sun won’t explode, and even businesses won’t close their deals just because we’re no longer functioning as a human being. But we love to think that we’re the most significant beings and sometimes belittle others just because we see them not as our equals.

Death is a sarcastic comedy. We appreciate the fact that we’ll die someday. We know that we’re mortals. And we even know our average lifespans. But crucial yet very important information held from us is when and how are we going to face our destiny. If life is an equation, death is its constant. It’s no use living out life if we don’t know the crucial constant that matters. We can only guess from experience, we can only guess from symptoms but we cannot be so sure of the exact date or exact event that will lead to our own destruction.

Is what we’re doing right now worth it? If so, how can we be so sure? Have we looked at others who seem very confident with their way of life which we don’t share the same view with? Have we compared with others not the message we’re holding but the actions we’re taking when we firmly believe that we’re holding the truth? Is what we’re doing really worth it?

As someone who believes that there’ll be time of resurrection, I sometimes see life as a cruel drama. “You follow us, or you’ll be condemned to eternity”. When I look at others who share the same view as me but not necessarily the same direction, the rule of the game looks similar.

People might say I should be pitied for not able to make my own decision or even question the road I’m taking. To me, one of the greatest gifts given by the Almighty is the ability to think, the ability to choose right from wrong. The ability and courage to question our way of life before it’s too late. Answers come from questions. We have passed the period when we’re supposed to follow without fully understanding. At the end of the day, we’re responsible for our actions. At the end of the day, we’re responsible for the road we took, and we should use the time given to find out whether what we’re doing is worth our life, before it’s too late.

From dust to dust, and we are surely one heck of an arrogant type of dust.

Elslinkus Springus Sket~ :D :D

Assalamualaikum J

Why teaching is one of the most rewarding profession? (For those who’re going to be teachers or are already in this profession or even those who think about being a teacher)

As an untrained teacher for about 7 months now, I found teaching to be a very satisfying job there is. You’re totally in control of your class. You are allowed to shape the students as you please (and with responsibility). You can ‘install’ your ideology to your students. You have people who would listen to your every words and that makes you responsible heavily for every words you utter. You can do anything and sometimes I do ‘abuse’ those privileges. Well, it’s hard to resist the temptation, haha.

For example, I taught my students about waves this week. I wrote on the white board the device I used to demonstrate the topic I was teaching that day. I wrote ‘Elslinkus Springus’ and I asked them to say it out loud, and they did. “Elslinkus Springus!!” they said confidently (perhaps they trust their teacher won’t trick them in any way..wahahaha). I promise you, if you’re their teacher that day, you won’t be able to hold your laugh when you make your students shout ‘Elslinkus Springus’ while what you showed them was a slinky spring.

Students, your innocence marvels me :D!

Teaching rocks :D :D

p/s – I did tell the students afterwards that the thing I was holding was a slinky spring and we had a good laugh :D

Relativity of Life :D :D

Assalamualaikum :)

‘Relative’ is basically a word we use to compare things. For example the theory of relativity which assert the idea that time and space are both non-absolute concept. In other words, they’re relative concept which depends on the observer’s frame of reference. Find it’s hard to imagine? Let’s take a look at another example.

Example 2:
For those who’re born in the same era with me, Dragon Ball used to be a thing of obsession. I used to remember that from this comic I learnt that enemies can be friends when they face a common enemy. Somehow I found it hard to accept this way of thinking when the people you’re fighting with your lives all of a sudden become your comrades. Evil in this comic is relative. When the person is on your side, he/she is a peace defender, but when there’re people who oppose you, then voila, there you are, you had evils to fight with.

So what is enemy then? To me an enemy is a person or a group of people or organization or whatever which their aim or mission or vision is different than ours. They’re not just different, they threat the very existence of our lives, the threat to our survival (be it politics, economics etc.). The question is, just because their ideology might seem different or parasitic even, do we have the right to eliminate them? What makes us superior in term of existence? Just because we’re here before they do?

Remember what Muhammad PBUH did to the Meccans. Muhammad PBUH was born in a society where worshipping idols were their way of life. When Muhammad PBUH arrived he suggested a way of life which was different from what the Meccans used to. He even destroyed the idols of the Meccans when He and His army of Muslims entered Kaaba in ‘Fathul Makkah’. As a Muslim we see this as a victory where Islam has finally been accepted in Mecca. That’s it, nothing more or nothing less to talk or think about. When a Muslim army conquered a nation, we said it’s good because the light of Islam is spreading.

Let’s have this situation for a change.
We were conquered by the Portuguese, English and Japanese. We learnt from our history one of the main reasons for Portuguese conquest of Malacca was driven by religion. They saw this as a campaign for their ‘White Man’s Burden’ obligation. We saw this as a threat which they come to destroy our society and destroy our system of beliefs. On one side, the people involved see their acts as righteous, on the other hand (victim’s POV) they saw this as evils which need to be driven out. See how one event can be both evil and righteous at the same time. The question is which of the views is the right one? Are our views largely influenced by who do the action rather than whether the action itself ethical no matter who the doers are.

The scenario for the question above is simple. Just imagine if we are living in a peaceful country govern by non-Muslims. If there is an army from a Muslim country advancing towards our capital, with what they claim to spread Islam towards our nation. Where our loyalty would lies? Are we going to defend our motherland, or to join the army and become a traitor to our motherland and our people? Just because the advancing armies were Muslims, do we blindly follow them?

Even the word Muslims has to be redefined. Who is a Muslim? The person who practices Islam. Next question, what version of Islam? What are you talking about, there’s only one version of Islam. I’d say how naïve. If not naïve I’d say how hypocritical. We say there’s only one version of Islam, our version. A Shiite for example would say their version of Islam is the truth. Some other groups would say the same. Yet we still think that there’s only one Islam, even though we somehow acknowledge the other groups of version of Islam which doesn’t confirm with our beliefs also as Muslims. And we claim there’s only 1 Islam, and 1 Ummah. Remember relativity, now, with relative to the non-Muslims, they would say Islam is not 1. How can we blame them as we’re the one who is closing one eye to this issue?

What’s the value of Islam that we have today, that we claim and hope to be our savior in the hereafter? How long have it been since Muhammad PBUH died? How can we be sure that our version of Islam is The One when Islam came to us not from the mouth of Muhammad PBUH himself? Even if the version of Islam when it came to us is The One, how can we be so sure that the same version is passed down for how many generations till it reached us? From what I can see, we’re trained to be bigots. Not to use Islam that inherited to us as a stepping stone to find the truth rather we believe without proper understandings that we’re holding the truth and the others are not, and we’re willing to die for that. What if we’re to be awoken after our death that we’ve been barking up the wrong tree? How many of us tried to find out whether what we have today is the truth? How many of us are willing to sacrifice everything and anything to defend what we belief is the truth, without really finding out whether our version of the truth is the truth? I find the latter to be the most popular.

Why I keep on writing this kind of topic. Honestly I’m frustrated with the situations of Islam today. People are more interested in finding out who are not ‘guided’ by searching for people who are different from them. People nowadays also interested in advertising their ibadah while little that they realized, they’re doing the ibadah not solely for Allah, but for people to see and to judge. Isn’t this a type of syirik? Doing your ibadah for other than Allah (we can surely debate on this, but I have little mood on doing so). Suggesting to people of how good we’re by advertising our limited knowledge of Islam. Islam supposed to elevate our position in the society, but lots of us today use Islam as a stepping stone to gain status in our society. How low can we be? Seriously, how low can we be? I look high to Islam. To me Islam is a sacred garden which shouldn’t be tainted, like a forest reserve, Islam should be left as it is. Islam is politics, Islam is culture, Islam is everything. What I see now, Islam is influenced by politics, Islam is influenced by cultures, Islam is influenced by everything. After knowing lots of people who claim to know Islam, I find it hard to believe those who claim to know Islam. After seeing people interpret Islam as they see fit, I find it hard to believe those who interpret Islam. After seeing the true colour of people who seemed to be ideal Muslims, or those who advertise themselves as good Muslims, I find it hard to not being critical to those who seemed to be Islamic. Am I writing gibberish? Maybe. Am I spouting nonsense? Up to you. This is what I think, and this is what I feel.

Cheers :D :D

What’s Wrong? :D :D

Assalamualaikum,
I think we learn with every breath we take in. We are becoming more mature with every step we take, and hopefully becoming wiser as we grow older. What an introduction..hahaha

What is wrong?

For the sake of writing this topic, I define wrong as something not right. What is right then? Is right objective? Can one’s right be others’ wrong? Can both right and wrong exist together at the same time?
I brought some students for a trip last week, and as usual, I talked to them, provoke their thoughts and sometimes even belittle their ideas, just to see how they would react. I never realized the significance of my jokes until just now. They’re 3 students in my car, all of them Kelantanese. I told them that Kelantanese cannot read well. Heck, they cannot read at all, and they denied that. Well I gave them one example, “how do you pronounce T.U.M.P.A.T.” I asked. One of them instinctively answered my question without much thought, “Tupak”, she said. Gotcha! And I gave one example after another and we had good laughs.
Well while driving to my friend’s wedding today, I gave this a little thought. What if the ‘standard’ BM spelled those words wrongly? It’s their language after all, and the ‘standard’ spellings came long after the words existed (another good topic to discuss..hehe) and I arrogantly said that Kelantanese cannot read, while maybe the spelling is not right to begin with.

Or maybe the spellings are right, and the pronunciations are correct. It’s how they pronounce those words, and just because the way I pronounce them different doesn’t make their pronunciations wrong. Maybe we both right though the way I was raised, the pronunciations they made were not. That’s what I meant with both right and wrong coexists. Does that mean that right and wrong are not objective after all? The things we perceive as right and wrong might as well relative. It all depends on the eye of the beholder. It all depends, on the values they’re raised with. It’s not at all fixed.

Then, why should we impose the things we believe as the truth to others. Why do we ignorantly without any thoughts laugh at others when their values seem different than us? For example, we Muslims cannot eat pork. Pork and Muslims are like nemesis. We don’t eat pork, we don’t want to touch pork, and we don’t want to have anything to do with pork. We even offended when we are related in any way with pork. When someone gave us pork as a gift, we say that’s an insult towards Islam as a whole (tho it’s not that relevant). The thing is it’s us who see pork as something that needs to be distanced with. It’s our culture, and we need people to understand and respect that culture. Fair enough.

Then why do we freely insult others’ beliefs? For instance, we have no problem, no guilt whatsoever when we make jokes about Hindus don’t eat meat. Do we really care why they cannot do things we can? We don’t even know why they don’t eat meat. We don’t even care. It’s not our problem. Not affecting our lives.

Guess what, that’s what others thought about our belief. They don’t give a damn. We expect them to know every single thing about us, things that might offend us, but do we care to do the same? We are an arrogant bunch. We think we hold the Ultimate Truth that others’ values are not to be treated as we wish others would do to us. We don’t even dare to question the validity of our faith we inherit from our forefathers, yet we rubbish others’ belief.

I don’t know why my writings lately would somehow converge towards this topic. Back to the right-wrong thingy.

People are afraid to express their ideas because they have no confidence of what they’re going to say. We also are afraid of others saying what we’re saying is wrong. What can we do? Well, we can start from us. Treat people as we want others to treat us. In a discussion, listen to what the others are saying. And by listening I meant, LISTEN. Itching to ditch what they’re saying because you know that’s wrong, or because it’s different from what you think? Be patient. Talk politely after the other party has finished what they’re saying, because we might be as wrong or as right as what the others are saying. When this respect needs is fulfilled, people can express their views freely and openly. We can’t change others, this should all start with us. We should practice to create this environment.

Well then, what can we do when others don’t give the same respect we gave them? One way is to be open to criticism (specially dedicated to me). We cannot be corrected if we don’t do anything wrong. To be corrected, we must do something wrong first. And to do wrong, or to confirm whether what we have is right, it needs bravery. Listen to others and be open to criticism. Easier said than done. Good luck!

Assalamualaikum :D

Sometimes I do feel like screaming that I’m so happy for no apparent reason. Just want to share that I do enjoy my life now (Alhamdulillah :D :D). I enjoy teaching!

I’m tired. They call me to come to school at odd hours. I’m supposed to remember @ least around 100 names (per year). I need to prepare for my lectures. Need to prepare for presentations. Need to attend courses. But hey, I enjoy every single drop of my sweat. I enjoy teaching my students. I enjoy expressing myself in class. I LOVE MY JOB!! (Other than the writing reports part la =p ).

People sometimes do complaint that we don’t enjoy overtime allowance, tho we do work overtime, all the time. I say it’s a bless coz I don’t have to count my deeds. I’m not just saying this to comfort myself. I sincerely think this is a very good chance given by Allah to make me a better person, to do everything for Him alone i’Allah. And sincerity doesn’t at all refrain you from enjoying your work, kan :D :D

Alhamdulillah :D :D!!

Teaching rocks!

P/s – Current song: Hey Jude :D :D

p/p/s – the sweetness of a new teacher’s passion. Hope the passion remains, amin :D :D

Sir? Teacher la :D :D

Assalamualaikum J

Short story on my experience as a new (untrained) teacher

Why teaching suits me (as for now)?

I love giving out my ideas and thoughts to others and teaching satisfies my needs to do so. My new environment also gives me the liberty to be whomever I want, without people (well, not explicitly at least) undermining and looking down on me. The last thing I need is people question (read: look down) why I do things, when the only reason they ask is to make you feel stupid, and not to help you improve yourself.

To be or not to be?

My first day of reporting myself to this school, the Academic’s Vice Principle told me that we (read: teachers) punch in our cards on 0730 and punch out on 1430. Sounds fair enough, aye (aye?..wahahaha)? Well it’s enough to say that 0730-1430 is just a teacher's official working hours, believe me, the unofficial ones weigh the same (if not more). If anyone thinks a teacher’s job is a boring one, well sir, I beg to differ.

Being a teacher (so far..) is very tiring. Tiring in the sense of lots of stuff to be done every week and little that you know, the week just ended and you need to complete certain tasks for the next week. To be more dramatic (from my own experience), you keep on working that you forgot that that day was a public holiday, and you need to come to work (early) the day after, and you wonder, when was the last time you were resting. A teacher must be a good multi-tasker. You don't only teach, you escort your students for their never-ending activities. You're their supervisor (clubs, projects, just name it), whether or not you're good in that area. If you're good, than good on you, if you're not, then, time to use all your available resources to learn. Now, don’t get me wrong, just because I said I’m tired, doesn’t mean I don’t like my job. I LOVE MY JOB!! :D :D.

Teaching is a progressive profession. You do something new each and every day. You teach the students something new and even if you use the same materials for the week, your audience would never be the same. Teaching promotes creativity, for the teachers and students alike. Teaching (so far), suits me well!! You got to love the children to be a teacher. You got to love your audience to be a good presenter. You got to be well prepared to present your ideas/materials to your audience, and that my friends, is the satisfaction in teaching, for me :D.

I can babble for hours about physics to my students. I can relate physics to real life all I want to them. I can promote curiosity to my students. You can try all you want, but you cannot force your students to understand you. You can make the subject interesting, but you can’t make them all understand your ideas. Sometimes you are too eager to present that you forgot that they don’t have a clue on what you’re talking about. That’s a good challenge, to make the students feel the subject as you’re, and when they do, that’ll be my greatest moment as a teacher :D :D

All’s well, or is it?

I love teaching, and I just realized I only love teaching. A teacher is not just hired to teach, they do lots of other stuff as well. My all time weakness, writing reports, is also included in the package. Daily lesson plans, weekly lesson plans, and many other reports which I’m not exposed of yet, might as well kill me. Well, moaning won’t make it better, so, like it or not, here I come :D

Conclusion

Teaching rocks!

How ar (#2) :D :D?

Assalamualaikum :)

How I envy those who knows the truth,
How I envy those who feels safe when they believe their version of truth is the truth
How I envy those who have the courage to change their strong beliefs for something new
How I envy those who have the urge to find the truth
How I pity those who belittled by others just by enquiring for the truth
How I find it's hard to know which is the truth,
When we conviniently say others cannot be more wrong and vice-versa
What if we find it's too late when we realized we've been barking up the wrong tree?

I just..don't know :(

Tolerate or Celebrate? :D :D

Assalamualaikum :)
This is one of the things I kept thinking about, but have little confidence writing as I’m not sure if what I’ll write fully represent my thoughts. I used to think that if I don’t have the right words, or inspiration to write about an issue that bugs me much, maybe because it’s just not the right time to write it down. Or maybe, I’m just not good enough with words, period. See, even the intro seems weird enough. It’s kind of annoying when you have things to say, and to you, it’s very important, but you just don’t know how to put it in words. Nevertheless, I’ll try my best so my thoughts won’t just end up being, well, thoughts. I’m just going to put a disclaimer before anyone reads this post.
This is not an easy-to-digest post. Not to say I’m too advance that people don’t understand, instead, because of my lack of skills in vomiting out my thoughts.”
Here goes..
Tolerate or celebrate in this post refers to our treatment to people who have different point of view in life than us, that might be inspired by religion, culture, political interest, etc. The problem is how we deal with these people.
I love this one particular Christian based (as they claim) conspiracy forum. The thing that I want to emphasize is how they (well, some..) despise Islam. They work hard to find evidence in Youtube, any news articles, any events that can relate Islam to violence. The Westerners (again, some..) fear that Islam would conquer their nation. These people would cherry pick the verses in the Quran, Hadith, or statements by some unknown so-called Imam that support violent. They spread the fear that Shariah would crush their society. The saddest thing of all is the misinformation spreads and people have this bad image of Islam, and they stereotyped Muslims. Sounds like I’m a bit defensive?
Let’s talk about Malaysia. I’m going to talk about the Muslims society in Malaysia, as I’m raised within this community. The situation where Islam is the Agama Rasmi (okay, have no idea what to call this in English now :p). What have we been told since our childhood? For example, Christianity movements threat this country. They move from town to town, even to rural areas, where the MPs don’t even know exist (I’m a bit exaggerating here..). They help the people; build schools and hospitals so that they can convert the people they help. In Malaysia, we have to admit, that we’re so sensitive with this issue, especially the Muslims. We say a lot of bad stuff about other religions. We have this negative image embedded in our mind when we talk about other religions. But do we really understand them? Or do we just judge them based from what the people, our old men, talk about them? Or do we just judge them because we believe their religions hold no value because we believe ours is the truth? Just because we believe we are blessed with the truth, doesn’t mean we have the right to mislead people to hate others who have different opinion about life, do we? Okay, now, where am I going..?
The worst thing in Malaysia, to me, is we let our ignorance lead our life. I’m talking to the Muslim Malays especially (and to others as well..). We tend to generalize people based on their ethnicity. We sometimes don’t even know the difference between a race, a country and a faith. For example, how many of us haven’t heard the term ‘Cina’ coined to identify non-Muslims? One might argue that this is just a casual term that has nothing to do with generalizing them to be non-Muslims. Well sir, with that attitude I’m going to say that we lack the empathy, and being selfish that expect others to respect our feelings, but not willing to share that sentiment with others. (These two situations (i.e. ignorance in religions and ethnicities, esp. in Malaysia) are a big concern to me that they need a special post themselves, maybe later..)
Now, the question is why is this happening. For those who cannot see, or prefer to turn their one eye off, this is happening all around the globe. My personal view is this is the classic example where the majority abuses the minority. Simple as that. Where one’s might defined by their numbers, where the public (i.e. the majority) has certain views (usually negative) towards others who are a bit different. This is usually done by those who claim to be the rightful owner of a place, or a country, and hold the majority in their society. Like I said earlier, this is not exclusive to Malaysia. It’s happening all over the world. From the third world countries to the most powerful country on Earth right now. They call for the minorities to return to wherever they came from (sound familiar?); even when they were born and they pledge their allegiance to the country they currently reside. Isn’t this just stupid? To me, these people just demonstrate their very limited knowledge of history, or justify their ill-treatment to others based from their anecdotes, and turn a blind eye to see the bigger and complete picture of the world history. Have these people who feel they’re strong, they are the righteous lord of a country, that they’re free to say whatever they want, do whatever they please to these minorities been minorities themselves? Well, shame on them if they have, that they don’t take any lessons from that.
We Muslims will all boil up if there is news that Muslims were treated badly. Our brothers and sisters were killed in Palestine (some argue that Palestine doesn’t even exist, well, in that case you know the place I’m referring to). But what do we feel, for example to the current church bombing in Egypt, supposedly done by Muslims? Don’t we realize how angry the Christians are? They would just say that this is another proof of the ‘Religion of Peace’ in action. Are we going to just sit silently, and treat this as just another news on TV, as this has nothing to do with us? Nothing to do with us? Really? Don’t we want to at least know what really happened and study if it’s justified in Islam? My point is, we’re all human beings with feelings and emotions. As we can get angry if something bad happening to us, so do others. So treat others with respect. Just because we are the majority in an area, doesn’t mean we can silence the minority. Remember, if we want to play this majority-minority game, no one would win. It’s our nature to find the differences between us, as this classic joke points out:
I was walking across a bridge one day, and I saw a man standing on the edge, about to jump off.
So I ran over and said, "Stop! Don't do it!" "Why shouldn't I?" he said.
I said, "Well, there's so much to live for!" He said, "Like what?"
I said, "Well, are you religious or atheist?" He said, "Religious."
I said, "Me too! Are your Christian or Buddhist?" He said, "Christian."
I said, "Me too! Are you Catholic or Protestant?" He said, "Protestant."
I said, Me too! Are your Episcopalian or Baptist? He said, "Baptist!"
I said, "Wow! Me too! Are your Baptist Church of God or Baptist Church of the Lord? He said, Baptist Church of God!"
I said, "Me too! Are your Original Baptist Church of God or are you Reformed Baptist Church of God?" He said, "Reformed Baptist Church of God!"
I said, "Me too! Are you Reformed Baptist Church of God, Reformation of 1879, or Reformed Baptist Church of God, Reformation of 1915?" He said, "Reformed Baptist Church of God, Reformation of 1915!"
I said, "Die, heretic scum!" and pushed him off
Hence, lesson learnt? This stupidity must stop now!
Now, I don’t think this post will contribute positively towards the society. I’m not sure if people even understand what I was trying to say. One thing I’m sure of is; I think this is an important topic. There’re just times when I feel like sharing this concern with others, but I just don’t know how to convert these thoughts into words, and this post is a perfect example of that.
So, are we going to tolerate or celebrate our differences? The choice is ours.
Just sharing my $0.02
Cheers :D :D

p/s – This might be my lamest post, with weird terms (e.g. anecdotes? Do I use that correctly?) and well, as usual, my grammar. Haih..

Gay n OK :D :D

Assalamualaikum :)..

This issue is not a new one, nor it's exclusive to Malaysia. The wave of being open as homosexuals swept the world for the past few years. From celebrities to some unknown guy who posted his sexual orientation in Youtube, they now feel this is the right time if not the best time to tell the world who they are. The time when human rights is championed by many. Everyone feels and have the confidence to show the world who they really are, and it's their right to do so.

It's also to me, an opportunity for us to learn more about them. I think as they are opening themselves to the world regarding to their sexual orientation, serious studies must be conducted to determine whether this phenomena (homosexuality) can be explained (e.g. why do they become homos? (i.e. is it solely based on their decision, or if there's something in our genes that determine the level of our homosexual-ness) or is it a phenomena which we should ignore and live side by side with.

One cannot run from the religion perspective when talking about this issue. The problem with this approach is not everyone aggrees with our religion point of view. It's like a Muslim says to his fellow atheist that he should not eat pork, as it's forbidden in Islam. Why should our atheist friend care? He's not a Muslim. Then we change our approach. We tell them that from medical point of view for example, that porks contain lots of bad bacteria and stuff (I personally dunno, just an example :p)

Same goes with this issue. Just because it's forbidden in Islam, we shouldn't get emotional in dealing with this situation. Muslims nowadays, some only kept their Islam in their name and IC. They know that for example, being a homosexual in Islam is forbidden. That non-marital sex is forbidden. They know that alcohol is forbidden. They just know, yet they can't seem able to control themselves to avoid or stop doing whatever they are doing.

Now, in Islam point of view this's just wrong. The question is, is punishment alone enough to tackle the problem? Just because the Holy Quran gives clear instructions on how to punish these people, doesn't mean it forbids us to study the roots and tackle the roots of the problem instead. Now, get my message clearly. I never meant the Holy Quran to be insufficient or question the authority of the text. Just, if you feel that's what I said, help yourself to read this paragraph again.

It's like, if some religious text says that flu is a sin. Are we going to kill whoever caught the disease blindly? Are we as a Muslim going to agree with that view? Same goes here. It's because we think we hold the truth, and everyone think their version of truth is the truth, the problem arise.

Now, what can we do. Personally, we have to first know what causes people to turn into homosexuality. This is not a new trend. Even the Holy Quran agrees:

"Do ye commit lewdness such as no people in creation (ever) committed before you? For ye practice your lusts on men in preference to women: ye are indeed a people transgressing beyond bounds” HQ, 07:80-81

This verse, taught by Muhammad (SAW) to his followers around 1400 years ago. So why should we be surprised with homosexuality today? We should be surprised that no one seems to have found a concrete reason on why this happen and how it's wrong and if it's wrong, how to prevent or deal with this problem. The people today who usually speak the loudest in condemning this situation, and eager to punish these people, doesn't have the experience other than knowing it's wrong. What if his/her son, is a homosexual? What if his father is actually a homosexual? If he knew that it's wrong, doesn't he want to know how to cure this so-called disease?

For those who think Islam is the way, the truth, and relevant, this is the time to show what has Islam got to offer to curb this problem. This's not an issue for advertising your political rhetoric. Take this issue seriously. Those with knowledge should share their knowledge to help the society.

If I'm going to take my stand, I'm going to say “Gay, is not OK”. This will only lead to the destruction of family institution. Love is sacred. Lust should be guided. For those who are 'straight', don't blindly judge others by their choice of how they live their life. If you think what they do is wrong, morally and spiritually, find a way to learn why it's wrong, and how to guide them who chose this lifestyle to become normal. Nowadays, everything is subjective. The very word “normal” is subjective. If you think what you have is the truth, in this age of reason, learn how to persuade and convince your way of life to others. Preferably, without violence.

IF.. :D :D~

Assalamualaikum :)

We often hear that if Islam is based solely on its so-called followers, people would run away and even hate Islam. Personally, If Islam is based on its follower, me myself have long left Islam. The thing that kept me from doing so is I believe Islam should be based on its teachings, not the actions of its followers. The bad apples who freely claim they represent Islam, defending the religion should stop doing so and keep on learning and please, keep your profiles low. Do not suggest to others who you not really are. Hypocrisy is not a good thing, at all.

Hippo..badak? :D :D

Assalamualaikum :)..

I've been wanting to post this, but I can't seem to find good words or examples without pointing to others. So, like I said in my earlier post, if you don't have good things to say (or write..), shut ya yap. If I can't point to others neutrally, I shouldn't point at all. By pointing others, we're pointing to ourselves as well.

I think this is a good reminder for all, especially in this holy month of Ramadhan. May we reflect ourselves, i'Allah, and do our things, our ibadah for Him, and ONLY Him i'Allah, without the slightest intention of doing the ibadah to get acknowledgement, compliments, etc from others.

We live to serve Him alone, and our ibadah, our lives should only be for Him, i'Allah:

From Google..

Definitions of hypocrite on the Web:

  • a person who professes beliefs and opinions that he or she does not hold in order to conceal his or her real feelings or motives
    wordnetweb.princeton.edu/perl/webwn
  • Hypocrisy is the act of persistently pretending to hold beliefs, opinions, virtues, feelings, qualities, or standards that one does not actually hold. Hypocrisy is thus a kind of lie.
    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hypocrite
  • hypocritical - deceptive, just pretending to be good, as in: It is hypocritical to say tell your children to behave a certain way and then do the exact opposite yourself.
    www.business-words.com/dictionary/H.html

May we reflect upon ourselves. We are NOT perfect. Thus, If we can find (and we will) even a trace of hypocrisy in our lives, especially in our ibadah, especially in Islamic matters (for we only hope to get rewarded by Allah..rite?), hopefully, we can wash this negative element away by instilling sincerity.

Teach ourselves (okie..now I'm confused when to use ourselves n ourself..huhu) to do things for Allah, without expecting our fellow human beings complimenting us, have certain views about us. Let people misjudge if they want (when we do good things of course..), for their judgement won't help us when we face Allah. Don't let ourselves sink even deeper, trying as hard as we can to please others, or to impress others, ESPECIALLY in religious matters. Truly, there's no benefit in impressing people while we should do our best impressing Allah :).

By saying this, we shouldn't do our best ignoring other people either. As we should preserve the relationship amongst us, His servants, and our relationship between us and Allah. And let not the thoughts of people judging us hypocrite making us stop doing good things, or stop trying our best to be a better person. Other person's opinion won't matter in the Day of Judgement, as long we remember the 1st hadith of Imam Nawawi's compilation of 40 Hadiths, "..Actions are judged by intentions..". May we reflect all our deeds. May we reflect if we're really doing our best for Allah.

Hope my points are delivered.

How Ar? :D :D

Assalamualaikum :)

Okie, less than 24 hours after my previous post, come another. Then a few months of hiatus, hehe (I hope not :p)

I'm tired, and my brain begs me to stop and sleep, but the same brain suggests I should stay awake and finish up the report and prepare for the test. 2 tests, 3 assignments. The university sure know how to suck the most of your effort before they allow you to go for a short holiday (aka study break..)

Late at night, my brain wont function as it should in daytime. It's like there's a set of random topics flashing in front of me waiting for me to pick any one of 'em and dig further.

Tonight's topic of choice (drums rolling..):

How do we know we're right?

I can't find the right tone on how to start this topic..huhuhu..I'll try being as straight forward as I can. Yosh! Sototaarto!

How often do we hear people say how lucky we're born as a Muslim? Islam is the way of life, Islam will save you, all that stuff. How do we really know we're barking on the right tree? How can we really confirm that other people with different faith as ours weren't as 'lucky' as we're? Why do some people judge a person as if they can be really sure they're on the right path and the other person will be damned to hell (forever~), if that person never do any open-minded, honest research, and just depending on other peoples work?

Why do people easily judge a Muslim based on whether they're Sunni, or Shiite? Why do a Sunni sometimes easily mock the other person just because they pray differently. How do they know they're the one with the right 'method' of praying. What if they're wrong? Why should there be a different between a Sunni and a Shiite? Who coined that term in the first place? Are the Sunni really sure they're practising the original Islam that's brought forward by Prophet Muhammad SAW?

What if the people who mock the other person because they're from a different school of thoughts of Islam, been born in the opposite camp? Will they do their best to find the right path? Are we doing our best to check whether or not we're on the winning (in the herefter) side? Or do we just blindly believe we're the right ones because we're being told so?

What if we're born in a different environment, different faith. Will we do our best to do research whether we are following the truth? Or will we just strengthen our faith (whether or not it's the truth) and start preaching. What if we preached the wrong idea? Who are we to say those Christians missionaries are bringing false messages? Who are they to say Muslims are a bunch of uncivilized, blood-thirsty souls who need to be saved? Do people really care if they're on the right side? Or do we really care on defending our beliefs whether or not it's the truth, just by being confident that we're on the right side?

How many of us are willing to take an honest journey for the truth? We all know the fate for the unbelievers in the hereafter, no matter what religion you're in. Are we afraid to find out if the religion we're in right now are not the right one?As for me, sure I am.

May He showers His blessings and mercy upon us. Pray so we're enlightened and guided so we can see clearly and distinguish good from evil.

Cheers :D

Graduation Pom Pom Pom :D :D

Assalamualaikum :)..(fuuh fuuh~ byknye sawang blog neh..huhu)

This post is dedicated to the graduates of University of Auckland class of 2009. I'm not good with words, have long lost touch producing good arguments and essays. So, congratulations to all graduates :D :D, whether or not you guys made it to the graduation ceremony, the fact you guys were once here that matters. All the memories and hardships, the fun and sad moments, bla bla bla.. (being lazy to describe :p). Celebrating Aidilfitri together away from home, struggling together to finish up seemingly endless course works, the same face I see everyday..haha. You guys are the best, only second to my own family. If only people can just read minds, so I don't have to write lengthy words just to express my gratitude. Well, you guys are totally irreplaceable!! You guys make Auckland feels like Kajang to me, even better. I really am hoping that I won't forget the memories here, well, I'm an expert at forgetting things, unfortunately (sigh~). So brain, if you can hear my thoughts now, please, don't forget this.

To Imran, Abah, Luqman and their band of engineers, Safwan and the gang of educators, Nizam, Meor, and many more. Congratulations!! May this success by no means stopping you guys from achieving more :). Yosh!!

p/s – Living in Auckland somehow made me realizes no matter how much we love this place, no matter how much memories it represent, we'll have to someday return to Malaysia (or we can definitely stay, that's another unrelated topic to discuss :p). Seems time has no regards of who we are, and we're totally bounded by its rule, no matter how much we want it to stop and would really want to enjoy the time here without much regrets or the fear that this will all end. At the end, a visitor needs to do what he do best, leave. The same can be said about life in general, rite :), because that's who we really are, visitors to this wonderful planet we call home :). wallaweh~ :p

Right? Nee? Meh?

Assalamualaikum :)..

yoshh~..

It's been a very d very very n beri2 while eh :p..

I watched this morning talk show on RTM this morning, something bout the happiness of marriage. The thing that caught my attention was not the topic (well, I'm not an RTM fan anyways..), it's the way its guest talk about the topic. I only watched a small portion of the show when I decided to change the channel. The thing is, there were 2 presenters for the talk show this morning, a Muslim guy and a non-Muslim woman. Yes, I wanna talk about religion-related stuff a little bit. How the guest showed a little consideration towards how he talked. He was talking bout Adam and Eve. How they were created, and so on.

1st thing is, the story was a bit, I dunno, unconvincing? When I said unconvincing (Islamic related), it's something that I never heard of before, and the guest never cited his source(s). I mean, it's a national TV program, if what he said, was not right, the wrong idea of Islam will be passed on not only towards non-Muslims, but also to Muslims.

Secondly, the thing that quite got on my nerve a bit, was his insensitivity towards the non-Muslim presenter. He was saying something bout how a woman was given the blessings of the instinct of a mother on the moment she's officially declared as someone's wife. The problem was, he gave that description in term of Islamic point of view, and he was like forcing, people to agree with him. It went something like this:

“On the moment the husband declared his akad (the declaration of agreement on something, in this case the marriage), the wife will cry. This is because Allah put His mercy and blessings to the woman; the instinct of a mother. Am I not right(and he was asking the presenters, both of em, and to the viewers)? I guarantee this. If you don't believe me, just look at all other newlywed couples when the husband do the akad. If the wife's not dropping her tears, then something is wrong”

This joke-like statement made me somewhat uncomfortable, as I saw the female presenter's reaction. Even if the presenter didn't show any reaction, I'll still feel uncomfortable as I personally think it's not the right thing to do. How can we 'force' people to agree with us, on something that seems to be hypothetical, especially, when it comes to faith-related issue? When the Holy Quran itself stated that there's no compulsion in religion[HQ 2:256]. Then who are we 'forcing' people to agree with our non-cited, unbacked claims?

And we shouldn't be prejudice, should we? Just because the bride didn't wet her eyes, doesn't mean she's not normal, or something is not right, right? We are not that desperate to make people believe in us such that others who witnessed something other that what we claimed, to be from out of this world, are we?

Everyone makes mistakes, and so do I. In fact, I do lots of 'em, hehe. It's just that, there are some things that really get on my nerves. The lack of tolerance towards others who are different than us is one of them. Sorry if my post this time sounds a bit emotional, hehe. It's not easy to satisfy everyone eh? Just simply don't, it's plain impossible :D. He was saying what he wanted to say, and so do I. Freedom of speech in a non-abusive manner, how sweet :D.

It's been a while since my last post, yes?waah!!

Well, I got a lot of things to write, just don't have enough writing skills to let me post anything (laziness is one of em, thanks..hehe :p). And I think if I got nothing good enough to post, better for me not to post at all, ne?

Jz sharing my 2cents. Cheers :D :D

Goodbye: PPSMI (for now, at least) :D :D..

Assalamualaikum :)..

The government just decided to 'return' the language of the teaching and learning of science and mathematics (PPSM) from English.

  • One thing for sure, the amount of people opposing the implementation of PPSMI are as great as those who support the notion.

  • My stand as for now:

    • Be it in English or Malay, I'd do my best to deliver my future responsibility (i'Allah) for the sake of Islam i'Allah :D.

    • Arguments at this (i.e. our) level will bring more confusion and won't solve anything.

    • I have no intention to argue nor to debate upon this matter. Any discussion/share of knowledge as to make things clearer is however most welcome and highly appreciated :). It's my hope to have a discussion where people are trading their ideas with the respect for others. The respect of others ability to think and decide, and the respect for their ideas to be heard equally.

I pray for the best of my people i'Allah. Amiin :D :D
