What’s Wrong? :D :D

Assalamualaikum,

I think we learn with every breath we take in. We are becoming more mature with every step we take, and hopefully becoming wiser as we grow older. What an introduction..hahaha

What is wrong?

For the sake of writing this topic, I define wrong as something not right. What is right then? Is right objective? Can one’s right be others’ wrong? Can both right and wrong exist together at the same time?

I brought some students for a trip last week, and as usual, I talked to them, provoke their thoughts and sometimes even belittle their ideas, just to see how they would react. I never realized the significance of my jokes until just now. They’re 3 students in my car, all of them Kelantanese. I told them that Kelantanese cannot read well. Heck, they cannot read at all, and they denied that. Well I gave them one example, “how do you pronounce T.U.M.P.A.T.” I asked. One of them instinctively answered my question without much thought, “Tupak”, she said. Gotcha! And I gave one example after another and we had good laughs.

Well while driving to my friend’s wedding today, I gave this a little thought. What if the ‘standard’ BM spelled those words wrongly? It’s their language after all, and the ‘standard’ spellings came long after the words existed (another good topic to discuss..hehe) and I arrogantly said that Kelantanese cannot read, while maybe the spelling is not right to begin with.

Or maybe the spellings are right, and the pronunciations are correct. It’s how they pronounce those words, and just because the way I pronounce them different doesn’t make their pronunciations wrong. Maybe we both right though the way I was raised, the pronunciations they made were not. That’s what I meant with both right and wrong coexists. Does that mean that right and wrong are not objective after all? The things we perceive as right and wrong might as well relative. It all depends on the eye of the beholder. It all depends, on the values they’re raised with. It’s not at all fixed.

Then, why should we impose the things we believe as the truth to others. Why do we ignorantly without any thoughts laugh at others when their values seem different than us? For example, we Muslims cannot eat pork. Pork and Muslims are like nemesis. We don’t eat pork, we don’t want to touch pork, and we don’t want to have anything to do with pork. We even offended when we are related in any way with pork. When someone gave us pork as a gift, we say that’s an insult towards Islam as a whole (tho it’s not that relevant). The thing is it’s us who see pork as something that needs to be distanced with. It’s our culture, and we need people to understand and respect that culture. Fair enough.

Then why do we freely insult others’ beliefs? For instance, we have no problem, no guilt whatsoever when we make jokes about Hindus don’t eat meat. Do we really care why they cannot do things we can? We don’t even know why they don’t eat meat. We don’t even care. It’s not our problem. Not affecting our lives.

Guess what, that’s what others thought about our belief. They don’t give a damn. We expect them to know every single thing about us, things that might offend us, but do we care to do the same? We are an arrogant bunch. We think we hold the Ultimate Truth that others’ values are not to be treated as we wish others would do to us. We don’t even dare to question the validity of our faith we inherit from our forefathers, yet we rubbish others’ belief.

I don’t know why my writings lately would somehow converge towards this topic. Back to the right-wrong thingy.

People are afraid to express their ideas because they have no confidence of what they’re going to say. We also are afraid of others saying what we’re saying is wrong. What can we do? Well, we can start from us. Treat people as we want others to treat us. In a discussion, listen to what the others are saying. And by listening I meant, LISTEN. Itching to ditch what they’re saying because you know that’s wrong, or because it’s different from what you think? Be patient. Talk politely after the other party has finished what they’re saying, because we might be as wrong or as right as what the others are saying. When this respect needs is fulfilled, people can express their views freely and openly. We can’t change others, this should all start with us. We should practice to create this environment.

Well then, what can we do when others don’t give the same respect we gave them? One way is to be open to criticism (specially dedicated to me). We cannot be corrected if we don’t do anything wrong. To be corrected, we must do something wrong first. And to do wrong, or to confirm whether what we have is right, it needs bravery. Listen to others and be open to criticism. Easier said than done. Assalamualaikum :D

Sometimes I do feel like screaming that I’m so happy for no apparent reason. Just want to share that I do enjoy my life now (Alhamdulillah :D :D). I enjoy teaching!

I’m tired. They call me to come to school at odd hours. I’m supposed to remember @ least around 100 names (per year). I need to prepare for my lectures. Need to prepare for presentations. Need to attend courses. But hey, I enjoy every single drop of my sweat. I enjoy teaching my students. I enjoy expressing myself in class. I LOVE MY JOB!! (Other than the writing reports part la =p ).

People sometimes do complaint that we don’t enjoy overtime allowance, tho we do work overtime, all the time. I say it’s a bless coz I don’t have to count my deeds. I’m not just saying this to comfort myself. I sincerely think this is a very good chance given by Allah to make me a better person, to do everything for Him alone i’Allah. And sincerity doesn’t at all refrain you from enjoying your work, kan :D :D

Short story on my experience as a new (untrained) teacher

Why teaching suits me (as for now)?

I love giving out my ideas and thoughts to others and teaching satisfies my needs to do so. My new environment also gives me the liberty to be whomever I want, without people (well, not explicitly at least) undermining and looking down on me. The last thing I need is people question (read: look down) why I do things, when the only reason they ask is to make you feel stupid, and not to help you improve yourself.

To be or not to be?

My first day of reporting myself to this school, the Academic’s Vice Principle told me that we (read: teachers) punch in our cards on 0730 and punch out on 1430. Sounds fair enough, aye (aye?..wahahaha)? Well it’s enough to say that 0730-1430 is just a teacher's official working hours, believe me, the unofficial ones weigh the same (if not more). If anyone thinks a teacher’s job is a boring one, well sir, I beg to differ.

Being a teacher (so far..) is very tiring. Tiring in the sense of lots of stuff to be done every week and little that you know, the week just ended and you need to complete certain tasks for the next week. To be more dramatic (from my own experience), you keep on working that you forgot that that day was a public holiday, and you need to come to work (early) the day after, and you wonder, when was the last time you were resting. A teacher must be a good multi-tasker. You don't only teach, you escort your students for their never-ending activities. You're their supervisor (clubs, projects, just name it), whether or not you're good in that area. If you're good, than good on you, if you're not, then, time to use all your available resources to learn. Now, don’t get me wrong, just because I said I’m tired, doesn’t mean I don’t like my job. I LOVE MY JOB!! :D :D.

Teaching is a progressive profession. You do something new each and every day. You teach the students something new and even if you use the same materials for the week, your audience would never be the same. Teaching promotes creativity, for the teachers and students alike. Teaching (so far), suits me well!! You got to love the children to be a teacher. You got to love your audience to be a good presenter. You got to be well prepared to present your ideas/materials to your audience, and that my friends, is the satisfaction in teaching, for me :D.

I can babble for hours about physics to my students. I can relate physics to real life all I want to them. I can promote curiosity to my students. You can try all you want, but you cannot force your students to understand you. You can make the subject interesting, but you can’t make them all understand your ideas. Sometimes you are too eager to present that you forgot that they don’t have a clue on what you’re talking about. That’s a good challenge, to make the students feel the subject as you’re, and when they do, that’ll be my greatest moment as a teacher :D :D

All’s well, or is it?

I love teaching, and I just realized I only love teaching. A teacher is not just hired to teach, they do lots of other stuff as well. My all time weakness, writing reports, is also included in the package. Daily lesson plans, weekly lesson plans, and many other reports which I’m not exposed of yet, might as well kill me. Well, moaning won’t make it better, so, like it or not, here I come :D

How I envy those who have the courage to change their strong beliefs for something new

How I envy those who have the urge to find the truth

How I pity those who belittled by others just by enquiring for the truth

How I find it's hard to know which is the truth,

When we conviniently say others cannot be more wrong and vice-versa

What if we find it's too late when we realized we've been barking up the wrong tree?

Tolerate or Celebrate? :D :D

Assalamualaikum :)

This is one of the things I kept thinking about, but have little confidence writing as I’m not sure if what I’ll write fully represent my thoughts. I used to think that if I don’t have the right words, or inspiration to write about an issue that bugs me much, maybe because it’s just not the right time to write it down. Or maybe, I’m just not good enough with words, period. See, even the intro seems weird enough. It’s kind of annoying when you have things to say, and to you, it’s very important, but you just don’t know how to put it in words. Nevertheless, I’ll try my best so my thoughts won’t just end up being, well, thoughts. I’m just going to put a disclaimer before anyone reads this post.

“This is not an easy-to-digest post. Not to say I’m too advance that people don’t understand, instead, because of my lack of skills in vomiting out my thoughts.”

Here goes..

Tolerate or celebrate in this post refers to our treatment to people who have different point of view in life than us, that might be inspired by religion, culture, political interest, etc. The problem is how we deal with these people.

I love this one particular Christian based (as they claim) conspiracy forum. The thing that I want to emphasize is how they (well, some..) despise Islam. They work hard to find evidence in Youtube, any news articles, any events that can relate Islam to violence. The Westerners (again, some..) fear that Islam would conquer their nation. These people would cherry pick the verses in the Quran, Hadith, or statements by some unknown so-called Imam that support violent. They spread the fear that Shariah would crush their society. The saddest thing of all is the misinformation spreads and people have this bad image of Islam, and they stereotyped Muslims. Sounds like I’m a bit defensive?

Let’s talk about Malaysia. I’m going to talk about the Muslims society in Malaysia, as I’m raised within this community. The situation where Islam is the Agama Rasmi (okay, have no idea what to call this in English now :p). What have we been told since our childhood? For example, Christianity movements threat this country. They move from town to town, even to rural areas, where the MPs don’t even know exist (I’m a bit exaggerating here..). They help the people; build schools and hospitals so that they can convert the people they help. In Malaysia, we have to admit, that we’re so sensitive with this issue, especially the Muslims. We say a lot of bad stuff about other religions. We have this negative image embedded in our mind when we talk about other religions. But do we really understand them? Or do we just judge them based from what the people, our old men, talk about them? Or do we just judge them because we believe their religions hold no value because we believe ours is the truth? Just because we believe we are blessed with the truth, doesn’t mean we have the right to mislead people to hate others who have different opinion about life, do we? Okay, now, where am I going..?

The worst thing in Malaysia, to me, is we let our ignorance lead our life. I’m talking to the Muslim Malays especially (and to others as well..). We tend to generalize people based on their ethnicity. We sometimes don’t even know the difference between a race, a country and a faith. For example, how many of us haven’t heard the term ‘Cina’ coined to identify non-Muslims? One might argue that this is just a casual term that has nothing to do with generalizing them to be non-Muslims. Well sir, with that attitude I’m going to say that we lack the empathy, and being selfish that expect others to respect our feelings, but not willing to share that sentiment with others. (These two situations (i.e. ignorance in religions and ethnicities, esp. in Malaysia) are a big concern to me that they need a special post themselves, maybe later..)

Now, the question is why is this happening. For those who cannot see, or prefer to turn their one eye off, this is happening all around the globe. My personal view is this is the classic example where the majority abuses the minority. Simple as that. Where one’s might defined by their numbers, where the public (i.e. the majority) has certain views (usually negative) towards others who are a bit different. This is usually done by those who claim to be the rightful owner of a place, or a country, and hold the majority in their society. Like I said earlier, this is not exclusive to Malaysia. It’s happening all over the world. From the third world countries to the most powerful country on Earth right now. They call for the minorities to return to wherever they came from (sound familiar?); even when they were born and they pledge their allegiance to the country they currently reside. Isn’t this just stupid? To me, these people just demonstrate their very limited knowledge of history, or justify their ill-treatment to others based from their anecdotes, and turn a blind eye to see the bigger and complete picture of the world history. Have these people who feel they’re strong, they are the righteous lord of a country, that they’re free to say whatever they want, do whatever they please to these minorities been minorities themselves? Well, shame on them if they have, that they don’t take any lessons from that.

We Muslims will all boil up if there is news that Muslims were treated badly. Our brothers and sisters were killed in Palestine (some argue that Palestine doesn’t even exist, well, in that case you know the place I’m referring to). But what do we feel, for example to the current church bombing in Egypt, supposedly done by Muslims? Don’t we realize how angry the Christians are? They would just say that this is another proof of the ‘Religion of Peace’ in action. Are we going to just sit silently, and treat this as just another news on TV, as this has nothing to do with us? Nothing to do with us? Really? Don’t we want to at least know what really happened and study if it’s justified in Islam? My point is, we’re all human beings with feelings and emotions. As we can get angry if something bad happening to us, so do others. So treat others with respect. Just because we are the majority in an area, doesn’t mean we can silence the minority. Remember, if we want to play this majority-minority game, no one would win. It’s our nature to find the differences between us, as this classic joke points out:

I was walking across a bridge one day, and I saw a man standing on the edge, about to jump off.

So I ran over and said, "Stop! Don't do it!" "Why shouldn't I?" he said.

I said, "Well, there's so much to live for!" He said, "Like what?"

I said, "Well, are you religious or atheist?" He said, "Religious."

I said, "Me too! Are your Christian or Buddhist?" He said, "Christian."

I said, "Me too! Are you Catholic or Protestant?" He said, "Protestant."

I said, Me too! Are your Episcopalian or Baptist? He said, "Baptist!"

I said, "Wow! Me too! Are your Baptist Church of God or Baptist Church of the Lord? He said, Baptist Church of God!"

I said, "Me too! Are your Original Baptist Church of God or are you Reformed Baptist Church of God?" He said, "Reformed Baptist Church of God!"

I said, "Me too! Are you Reformed Baptist Church of God, Reformation of 1879, or Reformed Baptist Church of God, Reformation of 1915?" He said, "Reformed Baptist Church of God, Reformation of 1915!"

I said, "Die, heretic scum!" and pushed him off

Hence, lesson learnt? This stupidity must stop now!

Now, I don’t think this post will contribute positively towards the society. I’m not sure if people even understand what I was trying to say. One thing I’m sure of is; I think this is an important topic. There’re just times when I feel like sharing this concern with others, but I just don’t know how to convert these thoughts into words, and this post is a perfect example of that.

So, are we going to tolerate or celebrate our differences? The choice is ours.

This issue is not a new one, nor it's exclusive to Malaysia. The wave of being open as homosexuals swept the world for the past few years. From celebrities to some unknown guy who posted his sexual orientation in Youtube, they now feel this is the right time if not the best time to tell the world who they are. The time when human rights is championed by many. Everyone feels and have the confidence to show the world who they really are, and it's their right to do so.

It's also to me, an opportunity for us to learn more about them. I think as they are opening themselves to the world regarding to their sexual orientation, serious studies must be conducted to determine whether this phenomena (homosexuality) can be explained (e.g. why do they become homos? (i.e. is it solely based on their decision, or if there's something in our genes that determine the level of our homosexual-ness) or is it a phenomena which we should ignore and live side by side with.

One cannot run from the religion perspective when talking about this issue. The problem with this approach is not everyone aggrees with our religion point of view. It's like a Muslim says to his fellow atheist that he should not eat pork, as it's forbidden in Islam. Why should our atheist friend care? He's not a Muslim. Then we change our approach. We tell them that from medical point of view for example, that porks contain lots of bad bacteria and stuff (I personally dunno, just an example :p)

Same goes with this issue. Just because it's forbidden in Islam, we shouldn't get emotional in dealing with this situation. Muslims nowadays, some only kept their Islam in their name and IC. They know that for example, being a homosexual in Islam is forbidden. That non-marital sex is forbidden. They know that alcohol is forbidden. They just know, yet they can't seem able to control themselves to avoid or stop doing whatever they are doing.

Now, in Islam point of view this's just wrong. The question is, is punishment alone enough to tackle the problem? Just because the Holy Quran gives clear instructions on how to punish these people, doesn't mean it forbids us to study the roots and tackle the roots of the problem instead. Now, get my message clearly. I never meant the Holy Quran to be insufficient or question the authority of the text. Just, if you feel that's what I said, help yourself to read this paragraph again.

It's like, if some religious text says that flu is a sin. Are we going to kill whoever caught the disease blindly? Are we as a Muslim going to agree with that view? Same goes here. It's because we think we hold the truth, and everyone think their version of truth is the truth, the problem arise.

Now, what can we do. Personally, we have to first know what causes people to turn into homosexuality. This is not a new trend. Even the Holy Quran agrees:

"Do ye commit lewdness such as no people in creation (ever) committed before you? For ye practice your lusts on men in preference to women: ye are indeed a people transgressing beyond bounds” HQ, 07:80-81

This verse, taught by Muhammad (SAW) to his followers around 1400 years ago. So why should we be surprised with homosexuality today? We should be surprised that no one seems to have found a concrete reason on why this happen and how it's wrong and if it's wrong, how to prevent or deal with this problem. The people today who usually speak the loudest in condemning this situation, and eager to punish these people, doesn't have the experience other than knowing it's wrong. What if his/her son, is a homosexual? What if his father is actually a homosexual? If he knew that it's wrong, doesn't he want to know how to cure this so-called disease?

For those who think Islam is the way, the truth, and relevant, this is the time to show what has Islam got to offer to curb this problem. This's not an issue for advertising your political rhetoric. Take this issue seriously. Those with knowledge should share their knowledge to help the society.

If I'm going to take my stand, I'm going to say “Gay, is not OK”. This will only lead to the destruction of family institution. Love is sacred. Lust should be guided. For those who are 'straight', don't blindly judge others by their choice of how they live their life. If you think what they do is wrong, morally and spiritually, find a way to learn why it's wrong, and how to guide them who chose this lifestyle to become normal. Nowadays, everything is subjective. The very word “normal” is subjective. If you think what you have is the truth, in this age of reason, learn how to persuade and convince your way of life to others. Preferably, without violence.

We often hear that if Islam is based solely on its so-called followers, people would run away and even hate Islam. Personally, If Islam is based on its follower, me myself have long left Islam. The thing that kept me from doing so is I believe Islam should be based on its teachings, not the actions of its followers. The bad apples who freely claim they represent Islam, defending the religion should stop doing so and keep on learning and please, keep your profiles low. Do not suggest to others who you not really are. Hypocrisy is not a good thing, at all.
